Click the “Load Data” button in the green Datasets panel.
Select “New York Counties 2000” from the menu at the top of the “Load Data From Where?” page that appears. Make sure the radio button next to this menu is selected ().
Click the “Continue” button.
Select a county from the list that appears and click “Continue” again.
Click “Finish Loading” to add this dataset to your list. You will see a number of additional options appear in the Datasets panel.
Population pyramids illustrate the age and sex structure of a population.
Make sure that the checkbox next to your county dataset is checked () and click the “Pyramid” button at the top of the Datasets panel.
Click the “Continue” button to graph your dataset. Notice the large number of options available to customize the appearance of your population pyramid.
Population projections are hypothetical estimates of future population based on a set of assumptions about that population’s life processes (including fertility, mortality, and migration).
Click the “Projection” button at the top of the Datasets panel.
Click the “Project” button to project the selected population.
Click the “Add Projected Datasets” button to add your projection to the Datasets list.
Select both datasets and use the “Pyramid” or “Examine Data” functions to compare the original and projected populations visually or numerically.
